Junior Ed Hickey recently won
a $12,000 scholarship offered by the New England College of Business
for his business plan for cell phones aimed at children. The challenge
was presented to the block three IB Business and Management class that
if they could write a good business plan for the New England College
of Business’s competition that they would receive an “A” for the quarter.
Few took teacher Tom Horn up on his offer, but Ed Hickey was one
of them.

The assignment was to write a business plan for
the product of your choice. Hickey chose to write about the newly
released cell phones aimed at children, which only hold about 20
numbers total and can only be programmed by an adult or someone
who knows the code for the phone.
“I worked on it for a couple of hours and showed
it to coach Horn and he made corrections and then I corrected it
for about an hour,” Hickey said. Hickey’s nickname in his IB Business
class is “104” because he finished the first quarter with a 104
percent average. He has an obvious knack for school work and the
assignment from the New England College didn’t
seem to pose that great of a challenge for him. “It was just something
to do, I was just being competitive,” Hickey said when asked about
why he chose to complete the assignment.
