Thanksgiving Thoughts

TRAGIC YEAR PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN “COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS”

Compiled by Dana Cazan and Sean Butler (November 23, 2005)

Year after year at Thanksgiving time families and friends gather around a bountiful feast to share thoughts about what they are thankful for.  This Thanksgiving a more profound gratitude for the treasures we have seems to dwell among citizens from all around the world. Beginning the devastation, a raging tsunami scoured the coasts of Indonesia, leaving thousands without the necessities needed to survive.  In Pakistan, a horrific earthquake devastated the lives of many, and our own soil was tormented during the deadly hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma that swept across the southern United States.  Recently, Jordan was struck with bombings, and riots still continue in France.  And yet, after all this tragedy, gruesome catastrophes are still occurring.

Bearing these thoughts in mind, members of Lasso Online were determined to find out how this has impacted both students and faculty. Below, thoughts about the upcoming Thanksgiving as viewed with the backdrop of this past year’s trying events:

" Definitely. I'm thankful that I live in Virginia and not catastrophe prone places and I'm thankful I still have my family."

-Caitlin Acosta, Senior

"I''m thankful I have a house and am not on the coast."

Bennet Wilkins, GR8

"I think I'm more thankful for the things I usually take for granted--food, shelter, water - You don't realize how important those things are until you watch people have it taken away from them."

"It makes me realize how lucky I am to even have a house."

-Haley Wood, Senior

"Yea, my family, I care about them. Though, it makes me concerned about the government. I would have thought they would have handled things better than they did."

Alicia Hartstack, Junior

"I am thankful that we are trying together to help each other more - like before the hurricanes and ware we were more self centered."

Jamilka Gonzalez, Junior

“Yea it does, definitely.”

"Well, when I think about Thanksgiving I honestly think about food, but, this correlates with the catastrophes that have happened this year because I am more thankful for the food I have.”

 -Sam Shaw, sophomore

“Yea, of course.  It makes me appreciate family and friends and the “fine night” amount of time on this earth.”

               -Mr. Snyder, Faculty

No. I am too busy with schoolwork so I am too busy to think about the news.”
