Coleman,
Pitas Each Take 4 of 5 Matches; Mustangs Meet
Cougars Today
(February 9, 2005)
Juniors Michael Coleman (135 pounds) and
Nick Pitas (125
pounds) led the Mason wrestling team last weekend, winning four of five
matches
each. Coleman, a state qualifier last year, lost his sole match to an
experienced Rappahannock opponent, while Pitas
fell to a
local rival from G.C Marshall
High School. Close
behind with 3 wins was senior
captain, John Sullivan; participating in his last home event.
The competition this past weekend included
two Fairfax County
teams (Marshall, McLean) and
Arlington County’s
Yorktown, Osbourne Park of Manassas, and
district
opponent Rappahannock County.
Although the day began with several wrestlers missing due to a
rescheduled SAT,
the action was soon in full swing. Five rounds of wrestling later, McLean
emerged with an undefeated 5-0 team record, with Marshall
in a close second.
With the District Tournament two weekends
away, the Mustangs
only have one more regular season competition. This Wednesday the 9th,
the team will travel to Manassas
Park,
and attempt to upset the returning state champions. The Mason grapplers
will be
counting on the support of local wrestler Todd Smoot, as he will be in
attendance. Matches begin at 6:30,
in the Manassas Park
Middle School
gymnasium.
