Mustangs Clip Eagles’
Wings 34-28;
Take on Top-Ranked Cougars Friday
By Adam Knudsen (November 4, 2005)
The Mustangs were on top of their game
Friday night against Clarke County,
winning 34-21 on the
Eagle’s home filed. The teams were in a deadlock until the fourth
quarter when
Mason was able to take the lead and hold the Clarke
County offense off.
Mason was the first to score in the first
quarter on a three-yard
run by junior Travis Greene. In the second quarter both teams scored
touchdowns
making the score 14-7 at the end of the half.
Mason was focused on the running game from
the start and in
the second half it was clear that they were going to stick with what
was
successful for them in the past two games. Junior John Schwengel scored
on a
yard run, but Clarke County
quickly answered with senior running back Holmes, scoring on an 18-yard
run.
Mason was only ahead by a touchdown going
into the 4th
quarter. Senior Steve Williams and junior Travis Greene knew it was
time to
step up, both scoring two touchdowns to seal the game at 34-21, making
Mason
2-0 in the Bull Run District.
The Mustangs made it clear that their
strategy is their
running
game. With senior Steve Williams carrying the ball 22 times for 138
yards,
junior Travis Greene carrying the ball 15 times for 134 yards, and
junior John
Schwengel carrying the ball 10 times for 41 yards this strategy has
been
successful.
Despite the fact that Mason seemed to
revolve its offense
around rushing the ball, junior quarterback Eric Blush was 3-3 in the
passing
game, throwing to junior John Swchengel who then carried the ball for
68 yards,
and to
senior
Matt Lemen and senior Steve Williams who combined gained 37 yards on
the two
receptions.
George Mason will be playing Manassas
Park this Friday at
home at 7:30. Manassas Park
is considered to be the
best team in the Bull Run district, so it will be interesting to see if
Mason
can pull off an upset.
