English teacher Dr. Al Defazio
recently completed an ultra-distance triathlon competition and finished
tied for 28th
place out of over 200 contestants on October 9 in Cambridge, Maryland.
Defazio’s total time was 12:06. The competition, commonly referred to
as "The Ironman," is a grueling, race that includes swimming, biking,
and running. He finished the 2.4-mile swim in 1:19, the 114-mile bike
ride in 6:10, and the 26.2-mile marathon in 4:21. Defazio’s race began
in the early-morning fog, which caused a two-hour delay, and ended in
the dead of night. Defazio has been training for the ordeal at least
two hours a day for many months and said that "this physical and
spiritual experience has been absolutely worth it." (Photo by Sam
