Girls’ Varsity Basketball

Mustangs Stampede Mountaineers, 46-17

(January 8, 2005)

The girls’ basketball team demonstrated rock solid defense and unstoppable fast breaks as the Mustangs defeated the Madison County Mountaineers by 29 points, 17-46. The ladies came out ready to play last night, jumping to a first quarter 19-3 lead. A brand new 1-3-1 defense, that coach Dan Wilkie added to the team’s arsenal the day before the game, proved too sturdy for Madison to break.

While the team’s mighty defense stopped the opposition in their tracks on almost every possession, it was Mason’s fast-breaking offense that knocked the Mountaineers out of any chance of a comeback. Between Mason’s tireless defense and constantly running offense Madison County had no chance. Contributions to the team’s success came from every player that stepped on the floor, but Maggie O’Toole’s 20 points were the most beneficial accomplishment of the night.

After the game coach Wilkie said, "We did what we do best, we ran the floor, we played great defense and we finished our shots. We had a great night. Plus, we didn’t drive two hours in this cold weather to lose."

The Lady Mustangs have three games next week, two are at home, Tuesday against Clarke County and Thursday against West Potomac, and the third is an away game at Strasburg.
