Elections Tomorrow

13 Students Run for Class Offices

By Rabita Aziz (May 11, 2005)

For the first time in a number of years, myriad posters promoting students for various class officer positions can be seen adorning the walls.  Elections for these class offices will be held tomorrow, May 12, during class conversations which will feature all of the candidates giving speeches to try to convince their fellow students why they are the best person for their respective offices.

Students will vote right after hearing the speeches and will cast their ballots in special red, white, and blue ballot boxes created by members of the student council.  Most of the offices are already determined because there is only one student running for that position.  Class elections for the rising ninth and new eighth graders have already been held.

For the rising twelfth grade class, juniors Sarah Sullivan and Maggie Person are running for president.  Absent a powerful write-in vote, Bob Bumgarner will be vice president, seeing as he was the only student who ran for that position.  Following this route, Ruhee Jaffer will be secretary, and Laura Shu will be treasurer.

For the rising junior class, sophomores George Breeden, Nana Saynieva, and Margaret Lipman are running for president.  Sophomores Zakaria Bouguettaya, Hunter Burkey, Katie Mitchell, Brian Glover, and Irene Morrison-Moncure are running for the position of vice president. Kit Thackrey, running unopposed, will apparently  be secretary, while Di Wu and Jeannie Tran are running for treasurer.

Finally, freshmen Ramsey Kincannon and Liz Rose are competing for sophomore class president.  Michael Costelloe is going to be vice president.  Jeff Person will be class secretary and Daniel Theilman will be sophomore class treasurer, again, minus a powerful write-in vote.

Elections for next years’ eighth and ninth grade officers have already been held. Next year’s freshmen officers will be president Isis Hanna, vice president Carlos Clark, secretary Jack Brorsen, and treasurer Erika Kleibrink.

Officers for the first-ever high school eighth grade class are: president Sam Atkeson, vice president Reilly O’Hara, secretary Liz Nystrom, and treasurer Micah Jasny.
