Looking for Unconventional?
Try Ping Pong, Chess, Badminton
By Margaret Lipman (May 11, 2005)
On Tuesdays and Thursdays – and often other days --- a small
group
of unrecognized yet highly skilled students gathers in the far end of
the Math Wing to put their abilities to the test. The tables go up and
the paddles and balls are dusted off. Yep, I’m talking about the Ping
Pong Club.

Along
with the Chess Club, the Ping Pong Club is possibly one of the
most unnoticed extracurricular activities here at GM. And yet, it might
just be the most fun. Table tennis is, after all, an Olympic sport. The
small group of ping pong players in the Ping Pong Club are arguably
just as talented as many athletes on the more popular sports teams.
Think you’ve got what it takes to make it in the Ping
Pong Club?
Then head down to Mr. Wilkie’s room any Tuesday or Thursday and play a
match. And if you’re interested in the aforementioned Chess Club, which
has also developed quite a following (Farrell Oxley is currently the
highest ranked player on the ladder), then visit Mr. Peloquin’s room on
a Friday for a slightly more intellectual experience. Also, a Badminton
Club (meetings/games are held several times a week after school in the
main gym) has also been started in the last few weeks and has really
caught on.

GMHS has quite a few unconventional extracurricular activities
-- you just have to be willing to try something new!
