Dear GM Students: Drink Water!

By Ashleigh Luthman-Hackett (April 7, 2005)

As a student, I know how hard it is to avoid that stinging sensation in your eyes when trying not to fall asleep, head on desk. As a girl and a teenager, I know how discomforting it is having acne in unwelcome places, not to mention at inconvenient times.

Think of not dreading fourth block on account of actually FEELING GOOD! Imagine…minor headaches, crusty morning eyes, and just sheer bad bodily functions purged forever! All of this can be done by drinking the recommended eight glasses of water a day. Now, find time and memory to do that! Practically speaking, with the heavy workloads of students, particularly for those involved in extracurricular activities, drinking eight glasses of water is definitely not always the first thing on our minds.

Our bodies lose about 1,200 ml of water a day, by both breathing, sweating, and of course, urinating. The amount typically recommended to drink a day, eight glasses, isn’t typically something that most would consider feasible, especially during classes. Doctors have explained that it is not always necessary to take in a full eight glasses a day. Not only do we get water from bottles, fountains, and faucets, but we take in a large amount of water from eating fruits, vegetables and drinking milk and juice.

So for those of us who don’t usually drink water at all on an every day basis, we are still taking in a fraction of the vital amount of the most necessary nutrient for biological life.

Quite ironically, the element that takes up more than half of our body weight is scarcely on our minds. Naturally, routes to becoming water-conscious would start in the household, but for those who didn’t grow up with good water-drinking habits should take measure to be aware! Buy a pack of 24 bottles of water from Price Club and bring one to school every day, sipping during classes. Doing this is so important for the efficiency of our daily bodily functions; water is in charge when it comes to keeping things moving freely in the body for it is a large part of the fluid that lubricates our joints. Water provides the medium in which all chemical reactions take place and the solution in which our foods are dissolved and transported around the body. Clearly, water facilitates a whole lot of our bodily and mental functions that keep us aware and energetic throughout our day. These functions should be constantly replenished, giving us more energy, a clearer mind, and a better day. I
