Our New Baseball Team Shows Promise;
But Needs Fans’ Patience to Develop

By Robert Kuhn (April 7, 2005)

With all of the prayers that the arrival of the new baseball team in DC has answered, I hope that this team of familiar veterans and fresh young players can deliver on a season that holds much magnitude to so many.  Our Nation’s capital has been without a baseball team for 34 years and there are many old fans as well as new that are extremely excited to see baseball come back to the city.  I would consider myself the latter.

The Nationals are in an extremely tough division in which they have been chosen last and I hope that the fans that have been waiting can be patient because it is a lot to expect from a team that has no real owner and had no real home last season for them to do anything more than win a few games.  I wish there would be instant success but I know that these things take time, and as someone who is an avid Redskins and Wizards fan, I am used to have to being extremely patient.  I believe that if the DC fans can wait for a few seasons, let the pitching develop, and let the team move into its new stadium they will have more money to draw a better more competitive team.

Here are some of the players that are under the eye of the Washington Fans: Cristian Guzman is a 27 year old shortstop that the Nationals received this year from the Minnesota Twins.  He has had a batting average in the high two hundreds for the past few years and will need to play better in order for the Nationals to have a chance.  Vinny Castilla is a seasoned veteran that has moved around from team to team in the last few years including the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros, but had a pretty lengthy stay in Colorado prior to that.  He is what some call a perfect example of what benefits a hitter receives from playing in Colorado where the stadium is much higher than sea level.  Castilla is another player that will have to continue to have productive seasons to get this team where it wants to go.  Jose Vidro is a 31 year old second basemen that has been a long time Expo, and now with this move will follow the team to Washington.  He has batted near the 300 mark for much of his career and should have a few more productive years left.

This baseball team has definite potential with a cast of young players that feel like they have a new start and home here in DC.  I am hoping that the team has a great year but I also hope that the city can give the team some time to develop.
