 Gay Marriage: Let It Be

By Eliot John Hagen (December 1, 2004)

Allow same-sex marriages! Why is the religious right so afraid of this? Why are people making such a big issue out of this?! Let’s take a look at America’s To-Do List.

Well, it seems that some people are focused on the wrong thing. For all of you who think that Gay Marriage is wrong and immoral and irreligious, I laugh at you!

Who gets hurt if a gay couple gets married? Are terrorists against gays? Will America be in danger because of gay marriages? Is our economy carefully balanced on a straight edge? (Forgive the pun.)

Now, I doubt that anyone believes that gay marriages are a threat to national security. It’s all about morality. Let me clear my throat . . . Egheum….You CANNOT legislate religion in such a multifarious society as ours! A religious citizen may boycott any practice he finds irreligious, but to make his opinions LAW would be a violation of the principles upon which America was founded! Every man has the right to "life, liberty, and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS," and if that happiness is found in a same-sex partner, the country CANNOT stand in the way of those lovers’ happiness.

Those who are against gay marriage keep on ranting about the "sanctity of marriage." Here’s a test. How many people do you know who are divorced or have divorced parents? Quick! Well? "Sanctity of marriage?" Yeah right. So these nay-gay-sayers want to protect the sanctity of marriage, right? They want to protect the sanctity of the wholesome American family--The American Dream. That dream doesn’t exist anymore! It’s a dream! There are no four-member families with two giggly children, frolicking about the driveway as they pile into the family station wagon to go for a picnic, the dog wagging his tail and panting to get into the back, the husband and wife kissing as they drive off, singing.

So, these Bible-thumpers want to protect the sanctity of marriage? OK. Let’s protect the "sanctity" of Britney Spears’ marriage(s), JLo’s marriage(s), and all of the other ones that couldn’t reach the Paper Anniversary.

OPPOSE A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT BANNING GAY MARRIAGE!
