Music Review: ‘Ghosts of the Lost Highway’
Sun Kil Moon Creates ‘Soul-Shaking
Yearning for the Past’

By Matthew Meyer (February 12, 2004)

Ghosts of the Lost Highway is the new album by Sun Kil Moon. Who is Sun Kil Moon? Sun Kil Moon is a new group with Red House Painter ring leader Mark Kozelek. For anyone who followed the work of the Red House Painters they will surely not be disappointed with the newest chapter in Mark Kozelek’s musical evolution.

Ghosts of the Lost Highway is a collage of songs for the lonely and broken-hearted. The songs encompass all the emotions that emerge from a soul-shaking yearning for the past. Sun Kil Moon is touching subjects the Painters never did. Ghosts of the Lost Highway binds pain from many ethnic communities.

Every song on this album is fantastic, but if I had to pick my personal favorite it would undoubtedably be The Last Tide. The song builds up with passion until the very end when it slides into the next track, Drifting.

Sun Kil Moon is on their winter tour currently but unfortunately you won’t be able to see them unless you pay a visit to a friend in Philadelphia or Manhattan.

If The Red House Painters never get back together for a reunion tour it won’t be the end of the world. Sun Kil Moon is the new morning for Mark Kozelek and Indi-Rock music. To everyone out there who is looking for quality music that is new and fresh, I highly recommend that you buy a copy of Ghosts of the Lost Highway.

If you like what you hear, go out and buy a Red House painters album (Sun Kil Moon’s little brother).
