Planting of Tree In Honor of Nancy Sprague
Lends Special Poignance to Arbor Day

(April 21, 2004)

The annual celebration of Arbor Day at George Mason took on special meaning this year as students and teachers assembled for the planting of a red bud tree in memory of Dr. Nancy Sprague who died this past November and who was a former teacher at the high school and principal of the middle school among other positions. High school principal Bob Snee and English teacher Michael Hoover, both of whom worked closely with Sprague, spoke about Sprague’s influential legacy.

The tree honoring Nancy Sprague was planted next to the tree honoring the memory of her daughter Beth, a graduate of Mason, who died a few years ago. At left, Snee talks with Nancy Sprague’s husband Steve. The Arbor Day ceremony was organized by city resident Dave Eckert and middle school English teacher Cay Wiant who’s seen in photo two addressing the crowd that included many middle school students.
