Cole Cautions Citizens
On Constitutional
Rights
(April 2, 2004)

David Cole,
a professor at Georgetown University and a correspondent for National Public
Radio, gave a lecture to a full house at the Falls Church City Chamber
of Commerce, Thursday evening. Mr. Cole spoke out against the widespread
deprivation of Constitutional rights in wake of the terrorist attacks of
September 11, 2001. He said that around 5,000 people have been detained,
while only one has actually been convicted of having terrorist links. The
professor cited the case of a Canadian citizen of Middle-Eastern descent,
Mahar Harar. The man was detained at JFK airport in New York, and then
convicted on the basis of "secret evidence" that he wasn't allowed to see.
Mr. Harar was then shipped to Syria, where he was tortured and kept in
a cell not substantially larger than a coffin, for 10 months. (Photo by
