Clinicians Tweak the Sounds,
Aid Band for Upcoming Festival

By Andrea Genovese Soares (February 27, 2004)

Three band clinicians came to help the Concert Band for a total of six hours this week in preparation for the upcoming District X Band Festival at West Potomac High School next Friday.

On Tuesday, clarinetist Dr. West, a professor of Music at Virginia Commonwealth University, who performed with the band two years ago, returned to help on Tuesday. He said that he believed that the GM band is one of the "up and coming bands in the region" and complimented conductor Mrs. Mary Jo Webster for her excellent work.

Yesterday, Patrick Burke, band director at Hayfield High School, and former band director from Springfield High School, Don Jeanes, attended a special concert/clinic. In two hours they improved everything from posture and breathing, to dynamics and style pertaining to the pieces the performers will be judged on at the Festival. If we were talking about writing, these improvements would translate to editing and proofreading grammar, punctuation, and the plot itself.

Don Jeanes, former band director at
Springfield HS, asks the band for a more
dramatic contrast in sound, one of the many
improvements he provided.
