District Play Begins Tuesday

By Rebecca Roa (September 20, 2002)

"Last night’s win was a confidence booster after Monday’s loss," said girls' varsity basketball coach Chris Madison. The ‘Stangs dominated the game from the get-go and outscored the Colonial Beach Drifters by over 40-points in a 59-13 victory on Mason’s home court Tuesday night. Mason was hoping to shut-out the Colonial Beach Drifters but with a little more than a minute left before halftime, the Drifters put two points on the board.

Junior guard Becky Roa had a season high 14 steals and led Mason in scoring with 14 points. Sophomore guard Christina "Kiki" Kirkbride added to the Mustangs' lead with seven points, one shot being a three-pointer and also showing her skills was freshman guard Julie Dorsey who had a season high of four steals.

The game against the Drifters was in sharp contrast to the loss to Loudoun County (34-46 the previous night. Injuries to junior guard Amanda Harrington and freshman point guard Maggie O’Toole weakened the team.

The Lady Mustangs open their district schedule Tuesday against the defending district champs, Madison County.
