Mustangs Fall to State Champs, 29-10

By Chris Campanelli (September 18, 2002)

George Mason’s Mustang’s fell to the Bath County Chargers 29-10 last Saturday on their home field. Bath County, the defending State "A" champions, came into the game with a 38-2 record over the last four years.

The Mustang’s held Bath County’s offense to only 12 points in the first half, which is quite an accomplishment when one considers the Charger’s average of 47.2 points per game. However, the Mustang offense was not able to capitalize on its chances, and gave up much costly field position. Junior Peter Dittmar was able to get the Mustangs on the scoreboard at the end of the first half with a thirty-yard field goal.

In the second half, due to a combination of bad field position and an inability to plow through the Charger defense, the Mustangs fell farther behind. Bath returned a punt for a touchdown to make it 29-3. In one final drive, led by Stephen Williams and Reggie Whittaker, the Mustangs finally found the Bath County weaknesses, and exploited them into the end-zone.

This loss drops the Mustangs' record to 1-2. Mason opened the season three weeks ago, when it got thumped by Bishop McNamara 52-0. However, the Mustangs turned themselves around the next week in Middlesex, where junior Matt Williams led the team in three consistent and effective offensive drives, which converted into a 22-14 victory. Next week the Mustangs will be at home against the Generals of Stonewall Jackson.
