Sports Update from Radford
Girls’ Soccer Wins; Face Tigers in Final; Girls’ Tennis Wins, Play Today in Final (June 7, 2003) Sophomore midfielder Rachel Sweeney and junior midfielder Alison Penland each scored a goal in the second half against Glenvar High School to earn a 2-0 victory in the soccer state semifinals last night at Radford and propel George Mason into the championship game against Brentsville, now scheduled for tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Radford. Brentsville beat Radford High School 4-1 in the other semifinal. The Mustangs, defending state soccer champions in the single A division, were scheduled to play today, Saturday, but steady rains and a soggy field forced the postponement. If the game cannot be played Sunday, it will be played Monday somewhere in Northern Virginia. Sunday’s meeting against arch rival Brentsville will be the fifth meeting of the year between the two teams. The Tigers won the first three games, but the Mustangs took the last game, a 4-2 overtime victory at home for the Regional Championship. In other sports news at Radford, Mason’s varsity tennis team won its semifinal contest and is playing today for the championship that has been moved to indoor courts at Va Tech. Senior standout Christina Sedney, who is playing for both her tennis and soccer teams, lost in singles and she and playing partner freshman Alex LaCoste lost in doubles.
