Boys' Tennis Report

After months of practice, the season of the boys' varsity tennis team is finally coming to a close. With the help of coaches Dave Garrison and Si Nerone, the team has done remarkably well regarding the circumstances.

The season was beleaguered by a number of factors that affected the team throughout the season. Early in the season, #1 Colin Ehmer tore cartilage in his knee, ending his season. With the future of the team in jeopardy, senior rookie Ryan Engle charged through the ladder to fill Ehmer’s spot. Additionally, the team’s practice schedule was been dramatically impaired by the ceaseless rain that has plagued the end of the season.

Despite these factors, the team finished off the regular season with a record of 5 wins and 2 loses. With that record, and a defeat against Clarke County with team score of 9-0, followed by a default, the Mustangs were able to enter regional tournament finals.

Before the team could hit the road, Engle, for singles, along with his partner, Ben Andrews, traveled to the individual regional tournament. Engle faced the young tennis prodigy from Paige County, Logan Bricker, who swept him in straight sets. The #1 doubles team from Central Woodstock defeated the Mason team in straight sets as well. Ahead of the Mason team sat Central Woodstock, the team that defeated the Mustangs last year in the semifinals. With a rematch in place, the Mason boys were poised for victory. For singles, #3 through #6 easily defeated their opponents. These victors were James An, Chris Mowbray, Andrew Roller, and Sean Snider. Luke Rabin was the only person to split sets with his opponent at the #2 spot, and eventually lost in the third set. Engle also lost to his opponent.

With the score at 4-2 in favor of George Mason, the team had to win only one more match to move on to the state tournament. The task was given to "The Twin Towers," Sean Snider and Andrew Roller. With their intimidating height and their skillful net play, they crushed their #3 doubles opponents. Upon winning, Snider let out a triumphant "Come on!" which silenced the crowd present at the stadium. After the trophies were handed out, including Coach Garrison’s Coach of the Year award, the Mason boys tennis team boarded their school bus as regional champions, with the state tournament ahead of them, which will be held at Radford University on June 6 and 7.
