Mason Pounces on Cougars 8-0

By: Becky Roa (May 8, 2003)

Stooping to the Cougars’ level of play, the Lady Mustangs nevertheless remained talented enough to prevail 8-0 against Manassas Park at home Tuesday.

The level of play only allowed most starters, with the exceptions of sophomore mid-fielder Christina Kirkbride, freshman stopper Jessica Oxley and senior goalie Megan Wilhelm, a total of ten minutes. Nonetheless, starters Kirkbride, junior Becky Roa, sophomore Rachel Sweeney, junior Alison Penland, and Oxley all scored.

The Mustang reserves were given ample time in both halves to put skills learned in practice to the test. Junior forward Maria Wood took full advantage and did just that with her first two goals of the season in the back of the net. Keeping it in the family, newcomer to the varsity squad, freshman mid-fielder Haley Wood also scored off a shot beyond the 18-yard line.

Nearing the end of the match, Coach Cliff subbed in two players and took out three, leaving only 10 Mustangs to finish the game. "Don’t worry girls, I know what I’m doing." assured Coach Cliff to the puzzled girls.

The Lady Mustangs will play their final district match on May 12 against the Clarke County Eagles.
