Girls’ Varsity Soccer
Mustangs Finally Beat Tigers, 5-2;
Head to States as Regional Champs

(May 31, 2003)

With only 10 minutes separating her Mustangs from a fourth consecutive defeat to arch rival Brentsville, sophomore Rachel Sweeney slammed her own rebound into the net to tie the Tigers 1-1 and send the game into overtime and Mason then won the Region B championship 5-2 on penalty kicks on its home field last night.

The Mustangs will now play Friday, June 6, in the state semifinals in their attempt to defend their state title. Mason will play the winner of the Region C semis, and if victorious stand a good chance to meet Brentsville for the fifth time this year in the finals on Saturday. "Clearly, our Bull Run district has the class of single A schools in soccer," said athletic director Tom Horn."

In the overtime, Mason senior goalie Megan Wilhelm blocked a penalty kick in a performance that her teammate Becky Roa described as "awesome."

Mason freshman Jessica Oxley was up first for the overtime kicks and scored. Then the first Brentsville kicker hit the crossbar. When freshman Jessica Porzel scored on the second kick, it started looking good for Mason, especially when Wilhelm, who prides herself on her one-on-one defense, blocked the Tigers’ second attempt by Brentsville’s best player, #14, who had scored a goal in the first half.

Then junior Alison Penland made the overtime score 3-0, but Brentsville’s kicker made it 3-1. Sweeney then scored her second goal of the game and essentially won the championship. Senior Becky Roa, scheduled up fifth, never had to kick.

The Tigers actually dominated the first half, constantly keeping the Mustangs out o their side. "During the halftime, Coach Cliff told us it was very close and that if we played to our potential, we could come back," said Roa.
