Baseball
Tigers Devour Mustangs 13-4;
Mason Ends 5-8 in District

By Chris Campanelli (May 24, 2003)

The Mustangs’ baseball season came to an abrupt finish, losing 13-4 to the Brentsville Tigers Tuesday night. Since Brentsville High School’s population has grown so much, this will be the last game between these two schools, as the Tigers will be moving up next season to Double A. The Mustangs finished the season 5-8 in the district.

The Mustangs got off to a good start this season, winning three of their first four games. However, they lost two close games to the first and second place teams soon afterwards, and finished the season only winning two more games.

Much like the football and basketball teams, there were very few upperclassmen who played baseball this year. There were only three seniors (Andy Koelz, Jonathan O’Toole, and Nick Hurwit), and three juniors (Andrew Yancey, Joe Mauro, Josh Sadtler).

The positive side of this is that there is much young talent waiting in the wings. There were four contributing sophomores on the team. Andrew Phelps and Paul Stroup played outfield, while Will Straub and Andrew Campanelli played catcher. The lone freshman on the team, John Schwengel, started at third base. With young talent like this, the team should be improving over the next few years.

year's baseball team that finished 5-8 in the Bull Run
District, plans to play for Montgomery Community College
next year. (Lasso Online photo)

The three senior members of the team will be headed off to college in the future. Andy Koelz, who hit two home runs and had a very good batting average, will be playing next spring for Mary Washington College. Nick Hurwitt, who had a .400 batting average, will also hopefully be playing for MWC in the future. John O’Toole plans to play for Montgomery Community College.
