Mustangs Knock off Raiders,
Mountaineers; Surge to 8-2

By: Loreto Martinez and Becky Roa (May 2, 2003)

The Lady Mustangs competed against district rival Madison County and non-district AAA Jeb Stuart High Schools and successfully defeated these opponents 3-1 and 2-0, respectively, in games earlier this week. These wins bring Mason’s overall record to 8-2 and its district record to 4-2.

"I’d rather have you practice tonight, to be confident against Brentsville," were varsity head coach Cliff’s opening words on Wednesday against Jeb Stuart. With equal pace being set by both teams in the first half, the first goal by Becky Roa didn’t come easily, but was just in time to end the first half.

Maintaining that same pace in the second half, the Lady Mustangs struggled to cap off the win. The second goal was led by Roa’s assist over the goalie and was scored by sophomore Rachel Sweeney.

Despite junior Becky Roa’s ankle injury, she scored off junior Alison Penland’s assist, quickly setting the tone for Tuesday night’s game against Madison.

Mason continued to dominate in Mountaineer territory providing senior co-captain Christina Sedney a clear shot beyond the 18-yard line ending the half at 2-0. Mason opened the second half with certainty and was quickly caught off guard when a determined Mountaineer shot and scored. The outcome of the game became uncertain as Madison fought hard to tie, but sophomore Christina Kirkbride scored, deteriorating Madison’s hopes.

The girls play at home today during the annual Day at the Ballpark which will feature free hot dogs, soda, peanuts and a souvenir stadium cup complements of Mr. Nick Benton of the Falls Church News-Press.
