Mustangs Fall to Tigers, 4-1,
Meet Cougars Tonight

By Becky Roa and Loreto Martinez (April 23, 2003)

The Lady Mustangs (4-2-0) confronted Brentsville (6-0-0) last Tuesday night on the Tigers’ home field and left devastated with the 4-1 loss. The game commenced with the Stangs in Tiger territory for the majority of the first half, but an unexpected attack by a Brentsville defender led to the first goal to close out the first half.

Going into the second half 1-0, Mason was determined to stay in the game. Sophomore midfielder Christina Kirkbride tied the score with a high ball outside the 18-yard line. Following Kirkbride’s goal, the Tigers responded immediately with a second goal. Fearing a loss, Mason created many opportunities to tie up the game again. Unfortunately, a third goal by Brentsville challenged Mason’s confidence and resulted in a fourth goal ending the game with a 4-1 loss.

Despite the loss, Mason, the defending state A champs, still has state championship hopes, "At this time last year, we had lost our two district games 6-0 and 4-1 against Brentsville much like this year. Our 4-1 and 2-0 losses are actually closer than last year’s losses and our players’ talent is actually better. So, that leads me to believe that we have a better shot into states," said senior captain Chrstina Sedney.

The Lady Mustangs take on Manassas Park tonight at 7, away.
