Turn Out on First Day of Practice

As the 2003 girls’ soccer season kicked off this week on the first official day of practice, more than 30 zealous girls competed against each other to gain the approval of coaches Clifford "Cliff" Caroll and Bob Penland at Monday’s tryouts.

Referring to the glorious triumph at the end of the 2002 season, coach Caroll said, " The bar will be raised high [this season] because of the success of last year." Having lost 11 players, nine of them seniors, from last year’s team, this year’s team will be faced with the challenge of successfully filling in key gaps in the defense and midfield.

"Last year’s team was the best team defense I’ve seen," declared Coach Bob Penland known to the girls as ‘P. Daddy.’

Senior captains Christina Sedney, Stacey Redick and Megan Wilhelm will lead the 2003 season, alongside key returning juniors and sophomores. Even though unfit weather forced tryouts to be held indoors, senior captain Christina Sedney said, " It’s difficult to judge skills with the indoor practice, but the overall attitude has been good, everyone seems excited."
