Capture District Championship
Mason's JV Subdues Eagles 57-54
February 26, 2003

Mason's junior varsity basketball team not only walked away with the Bull Run District championship Saturday night, it also took away "a little sweet revenge," said coach LaBryan Thomas.

The Mustangs' close 57-54 victory over previously undefeated Clarke County (13-1 in districts) avenged two regular season losses to the Eagles. The Mustangs had finished in second place in the district with a 10-3 record and was 12-5 overall. At the JV level, the district championship is determined by a one game playoff between the top ranked teams. There is no regional tournament for JV.

The Mustangs led from the start and held that lead until three minutes were left in the game and the Eagles took a slim, one-point edge. "But we maintained our composure and fought back and once we regained the lead, we never looked back," said Thomas, who is in his seventh year of coaching, his third here at Mason.

Thomas credits the victory to a strong defense, spearheaded by sophomores Robert Kuhn and Colin Milano. Ninth grader Travis Greene had 17 points to lead the Mustangs and eighth grader Ryan Larcamp added 11. The Mustangs' assistant coach is Chris Ferguson.

last Saturday's 57-54 victory over the Clarke County
Eagles that gave the Mustangs the JV Bull Run District
championship. Molano's coach, however, said that it
was his strong defense that keyed the win.
