Even the cold drizzly rain and the muddy conditions couldn’t drown out the spirits of the boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams on Saturday at the State A Championships at Great Meadows. The boys’ team came in fourth place, and the girls in sixth against a field featuring 16 teams. Brentsville’s boys’ team came in first and Central Woodstock first for the girls.

Junior Andrew Montgomery (#95) came in second place overall with a strong time of 16:55. And senior Annie Maynard (#76) came in sixth place overall with a time of 21:17. These two runners competed against 111 other runners. Maynard felt that the times were influenced by the weather and the schedule. "The single A meets were run last, after both the AA and AAA meets and the course was really muddy and torn up," said Maynard whose best time of 19:30 for the 5K was turned in last year.

In the entire history of GM this is the first year in which both boys and girls cross-country teams made it to states. Also this year the cross-country teams had the most people join, giving them the biggest growth spurt ever.

In spite of the cold and the rain, the George Mason cross country teams did well at the state championships last Saturday. The boys came in fourth and the girls sixth. This was the first time in school history that both boys’ and girls’ teams made it to states. (Photo by Bob Snee)
