Mustangs Fall to Hornets 51-22
In First Round of Regionals

By Becky Roa (November 22, 2002)

Second-seeded Wilson Memorial ended the Lady Mustangs’ dreams Tuesday night when the taller Green Hornets defeated George Mason 51-22 in the first game of the Regional tournament at Eastern Mennonite University.

Knowing that four of the five Hornets were over 5’7" tall, the Lady Mustangs knew that their speedy guards would have to create numerous fast-break opportunities in order to keep up. The Mustangs were able to keep the Hornets in reach during the first quarter which ended 8-1.

Mason head coach Chris Madison described the second quarter as "just unlucky" as freshman point guard Maggie O’Toole missed lay-up opportunities. A combination of frustration and shots not falling led to a loss of composure and the Hornets took full advantage and boosted their lead to 18 points by halftime.

.In the third and fourth quarters the lead extended to 30 points in spite of short spurts of good runs by the Mustangs.

Senior power forward Christina Sedney ended her career with six points and five rebounds before fouling out at the end of the third quarter. O’Toole finished with eight points and junior guard Becky Roa had seven points. Junior guard Amanda Harrington added a three-pointer.

The Mustangs finished the regular season with four lopsided victories and qualified for regionals by coming in second in the Bull Run District.

In other basketball news, Maggie O’Toole was voted to the first-team of the Bull Run All-District. Only a freshman, O’Toole was a key ingredient in the Mustangs’ success this year.
