Madison Stops Mason 48-32 in District Finals; But Mustangs Still Play Tonight

By: Becky Roa (November 19, 2002)

The second-seeded George Mason Mustangs lost 48-32 to the first-seeded Madison County Mountaineers for the Bull Run District Championship title on Saturday night at Clarke County High School. In spite of the loss, the Mustangs will play tonight against the Wilson Memorial Hornets who are the first-seeded champs of the Shenandoah District. The Mustangs are still alive for regionals due to their second seed in the district during the regular season. If the Mustangs win tonight they will play Thursday night at Orange County High School in the Regional semifinal game.

Saturday night, with the score within two-points the entire first and second quarters, the game took a turn as the Mustangs entered the third quarter. The first three minutes the Mustangs struggled on executing offensive plays and consecutively turned over eight possessions to the Mountaineers.

Of the eight turnovers, Madison County was able to capitalize on seven of them, opening a 14-point gap between both teams. During the fourth quarter the Mountaineers’ lead stayed in double figures and consequently they went into a stall, trying to take time off the clock. The Mustangs were forced to foul, but the Madison players were poised at the free-throw line and made just about every foul shot.

Senior guard Christina Sedney told Lasso Online, "I have complete confidence in my team in tonight’s game, in spite of the fact that we are underdogs."
