Utilizing a new defensive scheme that led to dozens of turnovers that in turn led to many fast break points, the Mustangs beat the ManassasPark Cougars 76-27 in the first game of the Bull Run District Tournament held at George Mason Tuesday night..

The Strasburg Rams will now host the lady Mustangs on Thursday for the semi-final game at 7:00 p.m. If the Mustangs win that game, they will move on to play the Madison County Mountaineers in the District Tournament Championship on Saturday.

The Mustangs went into the District Tournament in third place with a (6-5) record and easily handled the fifth place Cougars. The Lady ‘Stangers created a gap in the first quarter which ended with the score 22-8, propelled by a successful defensive press that was installed in the previous game against Rappahannok.

With numerous steals and converted turnovers, the Mustangs were untouchable by the fourth quarter with the score 59-22. Freshman point-guard Maggie O’Toole scored a season-high 28-points and junior guard Becky Roa scored her season high of 19-points and had eight steals. Senior power forward Christina Sedney was one point shy of a double/double with nine points and 10 steals.

The victory adds to the Mustangs' longest winning streak of the season (4-0) and is "a huge boost" to fulfilling their team goal set at the beginning of the season to get to the Regional tournament says senior leader Christina Sedney.

During their win streak the Mustangs outscored their opponents by 123 points (243-120), knocking off Manassas Park 45-39, Clarke County 44-32, and Rappahanok 78-22.

"The girls have gotten their momentum at just the right time and are confident going into tonight's crucial semifinal game," said head coach Chris Madison. "We're psyched."
