Williams Leads
Mustangs over Bulldogs
In 12-6 Homecoming
Victory
By Chris Campanelli (October 1,
2002)
Matt Williams led the Mustangs to
a 12-6 victory over Goochland in Mason’s Homecoming Game last Saturday.
Williams played quarterback and accumulated 11 tackles at linebacker and
later rushed for 53 yards at fullback.
The victory, following a 47-0 loss
the previous week to Stonewall Jackson and a 29-3 loss the previous week
to Bath County, showed that the Mustangs could reverse the losing trend.
The Mustangs’defense showed vast
improvement by running a 4X4 stacked linebacker set. Head coach Tom Horn’s
new scheme applied constant pressure to Goochland’s backfield with its
stunts and blitzes.

On the offensive side, Mason found
success strictly in its running game. The Mustangs opened the game with
a drive that ended in the end zone. Running back Reggie Whitakker led this
scoring attack, but the touchdown was nullified by a clipping penalty.
The subsequent field goal try was missed and the Mustangs still stood at
0-0, but managed to control the ball the rest of the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Mustangs
converted another long drive for a touchdown on a 10-yard run by Stephen
Williams. The Mustang defense continued to hold till halftime. |
Early in the second half, Matt Williams
was forced to step up and play fullback due to an injury to Stephen Williams.
Senior Chris Campanelli replaced Williams at quarterback and was at the
helm in the second half. The Mustangs controlled the ball for 11 of the
12 minutes in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Matt Williams found success
running the ball consistently, putting the Mustangs on the scoreboard once
more in the fourth quarter with a short yardage touchdown.
The Bulldogs were finally able to
score with a long pass and a short run. |
