Mustangs Triumph Over Previously
Undefeated Clarke County Eagles

By John Ruffino (January 24, 2003)

The Mustang volleyball team defeated Clarke County this past Tuesday at home. The first match clearly belonged to the Eagles with a score of 15-5. However, the Mustangs got their act together and united during the tense second round.

With a two-point lead in the middle of the second round, the Eagles and the Mustangs dueled it out. The lead was switching sides throughout the match, but when Clarke made a serving error the Mustangs regained possession of the ball. Mustang possession was the turning point of the match. With strong serving and defense by Laura Straub, Rwaida Al-Shagra, Christine Hillegass, as well as Sarah Snyder the Mustangs were able to win the second match with a score of 15-11.

In between the match the Mustangs gathered for huddle before entering the arena to win the third match. Clarke County provided a challenging and intense third round and lost game point when the players missed a ball hit by senior Aysha Twose. The instant the volleyball hit the wood floor, Clarke County starters fell to the ground then lined up to shake the hands of the Mustang volleyball team. 15-13 was the final score.

"This is the best we’ve ever played and this is how the rest of the season will be!" said ecstatic senior Aysha Twose after the game. "Our morale is up 100 percent, we have become machines of destruction" stated junior Rwaida Al-Shagra with extreme pride. The only response received from starter Laura Straub was "Bling Bling!" and a huge smile.

The Mustangs are on the road tonight and will be playing Madison County.

The next home game will be on January 30 with JV starting at 6:30pm.
