Album Review: ‘In the Flesh’
Waters Is ‘Supremely Satisfying’

By John Ruffino (May 15, 2003)

If you are a Pink Floyd fan, you will naturally embrace Roger Waters’s live CD entitled "In the Flesh," an amazing live 2-disc set containing 90 percent of Pink Floyd originals and 10 percent of Roger Waters’s solo music.

For those who are unfamiliar with Roger Waters, he is one of the original co-founders and former bassist of the legendary British rock band Pink Floyd. Waters left Pink Floyd in 1983 due to personal differences, but what he didn’t expect was when guitarist David Gilmour carried on the band’s original name with only two original members, both of whom did not form the band.

Roger Waters no longer needs the name Pink Floyd to be a well-respected musician and songwriter. Pink Floyd was and still is a great band, however, if the music is to be enjoyed it must possess Roger Waters.

"In the Flesh" is great because one can hear the actual songwriter perform these songs. The majority if not all, of Pink Floyd songs from beginning to 1983 were written by none other than Roger Waters, and to hear someone else play them would ruin the feel. It would be like listening to the bassist of Led Zeppelin performing all Led Zeppelin songs without the original band; it just doesn’t have the power needed.

The disc is also very good because the songs aren’t played like they are recorded which gives it a new and interesting sound as well as the original greatness. The disc is also strictly about the music, which is the point of purchasing it; you don’t have to worry about a long, meaningless monologue, crowd small-talk, and other musical distractions – it’s straight up music from start to finish.

If you are a fan of Pink Floyd, you should definitely pick up Roger Waters’s "In the Flesh" CD, you will be nothing but supremely satisfied.
