‘Two Weeks Notice’: Predictable, but Fun By-the-Book Romantic Comedy By Kristin Sommers (December 31, 2002) "Two Weeks Notice" starring Sandra Bullock as Lucy Kelson and Hugh Grant as George Wade is a by-the-book romantic comedy spiced up with tons of one liners and great chemistry between the two leads. The story opens with Lucy, an avid protester shown by her bohemian-inspired wardrobe and Birkenstocks, a throw back to the 1960’s hippies. She is protesting another building being torn down by Wade Corporations. But when she learns what Wade’s next target is, she decides she has to do more than protest. Lucy decides to go see George Wade, hoping to change his ideas about the community center and he is so impressed with her legal expertise that he hires her. She takes the job thinking that she can make changes from the inside and he agrees not to tear down the center if she takes the job. The problem is that Lucy is more than a lawyer; she becomes almost his personal assistant. She picks out his suits, picks up his dry-cleaning and chooses his stationery. When she receives an ‘Emergency’ page on her phone and finds out that it was only a fashion emergency that pulled her away from her best friend’s wedding she gives her two weeks notice. But Wade Corporations has a lot more clout than she thought. He has called any place that she can think of applying to and said that if she is hired than his company will no longer do business with them. Lucy goes back and says that she will find her own replacement if he will let her go. George agrees and a young and ambitious lawyer (Alicia Witt) comes in for an interview. George is taken aback by her and Lucy feels a tint of jealousy for her new trainee. As always in romantic comedies, Lucy wonders if she is doing the right thing by leaving. The story ends with, of course, a romantic speech only seen in the movies and with a by- the-book ending for a romantic comedy. "Two Weeks Notice" is cute and funny with a very predictable ending, but if you want a nice relaxing movie this is the one to see.
