Spirit Week Results:
Freshmen Take Early Lead in Spirit Competition
By Tammy Ashworth (September 25,
2002)
GM’s annual spirit week started off
on a high note this Monday with "Oldies Day," as students turned out in
high numbers to show their true Grease fashion. Masonites flooded
the halls, in poodle skirts and saddle shoes, eager to steal spirit points
from their rivals in other classes.
The class of 2004 works furiously against the
clock to perfect their Disco Inferno hallway. |
For many students, however, the
school day did not end at 2:45. Dozens stayed after to decorate their grade’s
designated hallway. At 5:00, the judges ordered decorators to clear the
hallways, and the students finally headed home.
Just what were the results of their
efforts? In a stunning upset, the freshmen won the hall decorating competition,
and are currently in first place with 170 points overall. The seniors have
159 points and second place honors for their Zoot Suit Riot-themed hallway,
followed by the sophomores, who are in third place with 152 points. In
fourth place is the junior class with a score of 123 points for their Disco
spirit decorations, and participation this Monday. |
Tuesday brought us back to modern
times with "Hip-Hop Day." Big and baggy was the mode of the day, with many
students dressed as their favorite hip-hop artists. A few were even seen
sporting boom boxes, much to the chagrin of some teachers. The point tallies
for this day will be reported in tomorrow’s spirit week update.
Today concluded with the freshmen-sophomore
kickball game at 3:05, where the freshmen asserted their unexpectedly fierce
unity and class pride yet again by beating the sophomores. Upperclassmen
beware! It appears the seniors may face a bigger challenge than previously
expected in their ascent to the top this year.
The beat goes on tomorrow with "Disco
Day," followed by "Swing Day" on Thursday, and Friday’s traditional "Red
and White Day." The always-popular girls’ Powderpuff football game between
the juniors and seniors, and the Homecoming pep rally, will also take place
on Friday. (Click here

Oldies"-themed hall decorations. |
There are still three days left,
so be sure to support your class: Search your closets for that perfect
spirit day outfit, attend school games, and go to Friday’s pep rally. It’s
not too late to win those crucial spirit points!
