All Choirs Join in Finale
By Kate O'Hara (May 19, 2003)

This past Friday night in the GMHS auditorium, Opus Zero, under the direction of Frank Marino performed in the final concert of the 2002-2003 season. The evening was entitled "A Choral Collage."

In a departure from the normal individual concert, every school sponsored choir in the Falls Church City school system participated. Members of the Thomas Jefferson Elementary School choir sang six numbers that included an Italian folk song called "Ma belle Bimba" and an interpretation of Cruella De Vil, from the classic Disney movie "101 Dalmations."

In their debut concert, the George Mason Middle School choir, directed by Connie Jenkins sang four numbers. The all girl choir is audition based, and the girls all participate in a full season of choral fun.

The GMHS madrigal singers performed three songs, each acapella. Memorable solos were given by Daisy Torla and Joseph Mauro on the song "I’m Gonna Lift My Voice and Sing." The madrigal singers are also an audition based group that meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. They recently received a superior rating at district festival.

The last group of the evening was the GMHS mixed choir, Opus Zero. Accompanied by Connie Jenkins and Larry Allen, Mr. Frank Marino led the group in five songs. Opus performed "Li’l Liza Jane," "Cantate Domino," "Fly Away Melody," and "I Love A Piano," with soloists Arya Namboodiri and Chad O’Hara.

The evening ended with "When We All Have A Dream," in which all choirs sang. The evening was a success, and so was the 2002-2004 Choral season.
