IB Art Show
42 Students Showcase ‘Serious Play’

By Katie Rosenberger (May 1, 2003)

"Serious play," is how art teacher John Ballou described the efforts of the 42 IB Art students whose work was featured in this year’s IB Art show.

All 42 students, including the eight Higher Level students and 34 Standard Level students, took the IB oral exam last week and although no one will find out until July how they scored, the art show was a beautifully put together collection of the students’ artistic achievements.

This year’s show featured a wide variety of work ranging from an oil painting "Homage to Monet" by Hoan Tchen, to the colorful photography of Marlies Tumolo, who featured a postcard-worthy photo titled, "Wandering the Sea." There were also interesting pieces by Nora McCulla including one titled "Waffles of Pain" in which Nora painted actual waffles and stuck them to a canvas.

Other pieces of interest included jewelry made by Emily Buckler, and cartoon-like drawings by Vineet Gorhandas, including one self-portrait of himself in a bear suit titled "Me." Andrew Montgomery sculpted Spiderman out of clay and carved figures out of stone, and Kate O’Hara had a compilation of interesting modern art, including a "Commie Box."

Mr. Ballou was very pleased with his students’ art. He said that "all the students in the show have reason to be proud of their work" and many of the pieces showed "real quality and challenge." Although he mentioned that examiners have to grade objectively--so sometimes students don’t get the score that they deserve--he said that he has seen "so much growth among many kids throughout the year."

The IB Art Show is the culmination of the art intensive class that displays to the IB examiners the work that students have done during the past year. This, along with the research workbook, containing pictures and rough work dealing with artists that each student found influential, and the IB Art oral, will make up the students’ final IB grade.
