Snow Continues to Plague Schedule
‘Oklahoma!’ to Open Tonight

By Sara Kaplow (February 28, 2003)

Update: At 12:30 this afternoon it was announced that Oklahoma! WILL open tonight.  Curtain time is 7:30 P.M.  Additional performances are scheduled for Saturday evening at 7:30 and on Sunday afternoon at 2:00.

This year’s musical, Oklahoma!, opens this week here at George Mason. The show, which was scheduled to open Thursday, was canceled due to the weather and the performance schedule has yet to be determined. Nevertheless, the show will go on sometime either this weekend or next.

The show centers around two love-birds, Curly and Laurey, played by juniors Greg Corbino and Sarah Snyder. The plot thickens when Laurey agrees to go to the box social with hired hand Jud Fry (Todd Johnston), and Curly ends up attending the event with Laurey’s Aunt Eller, senior Kate O’Hara. The secondary plot involves a love triangle between Ado Annie Carnes (Annie Wanlund), cowboy Will Parker (Chad O’Hara), and peddler Ali Hakim (Sam Adylette).

The show features a number of lively musical and dance numbers including "The Farmer and the Cowman," "Many a New Day," and the title song. The cast is comprised of over 25 high school students, as well as a few middle school students. Many parents also spent hours sewing and fitting custom-made costumes for the show. Each character has at least two costumes.

Mr. John Ballou and his stage crew again created the elaborate set, and as usual Mr. Frank Marino choreographed, directed, and designed costumes for the show. The live orchestra is skillfully led by Ms. Mary Jo Webster and includes students, parents, and teachers.

If the show is in fact postponed until next weekend, some changes may be made in the cast depending on what days the performances are rescheduled for. Please continue to check the Falls Church City Public School website or monitor Channel 12 for updates on the performance schedule.
