in VHSL District Theater Competition

By Katie Rosenberger (November 19, 2002)

Matt Myers and Stefanie Johnston were nominated as the top actors in the district for their superior performances in the one-act play "Property Rites," at the Virginia High School League One-Act Play Competition held on Saturday, November 9th, on the George Mason Stage.

In the 35 minutes that each school was given to perform their play, the George Mason thespians received the highest number of overall points from the judges. Due to the ordinal ranking system that was used to determine placing, however, George Mason only received a third place spot out of the five schools that competed.

The play was written by Alan Haehnel, a high school English teacher in Vermont, and involves an inventor who created a computerized mechanism that controls nine life-sized dolls. The dolls were to be sold as a unit to accomplish household activities such as answering the phone, but the dolls began to come alive, which created conflict for the inventor.

The director of the play, Frank Marino, also received the title of Coach of the Year for the Bull Run District.
