Masonites Rehearse Shelter-in-Place
(March 19, 2003)
Masonites practiced their first Shelter-in-Place (SIP) drill today, preparing for a day they hope will never come. SIP "is seen as a temporary measure taken during the time of a temporary threat," according to a memo sent by principal Bob Snee to his staff. In the event that the public authorities would notify the school system that a crisis such as the release of chemical or biological weapons, school officials would direct students to a safe location. In the case of George Mason that is the auditorium. Designated staff members then seal the doors shut with plastic and duct tape and the ventilation system is turned off and sealed.. Bottled water and emergency snacks (currently pop tarts, revealed Snee) are stored in the auditorium. Above, athletic director Tom Horn seals the auditorium doors with plastic. Teachers with their crisis bags listen to Snee’s instructions and assistant principal Tim Guy meets with members of the Situation Management Team. (Photos by Loreto Martinez)
