Valentine's Day 2003
"Dos and Don'ts" When Shopping for Your Valentine
Arranged by Rabita Aziz, Kristin Sommers, and Tammy Ashworth (February 14, 2003)

When it comes to Valentine's Day shopping for their special someone, friends, and family, Masonites tend to fall into one of two categories: The perfectly prepared consumer, or just another of the hopelessly dazed and confused masses. But Lasso Online is here to help the gifting impaired with this year's Valentine's Day "Dos and Don'ts," a helpful guide to planning the perfect Valentine's Day surprises.

Don’t...

...Forget! The first and most important "don't" when it comes to Valentine's Day, forgetting can be a real romance killer.

...Even think about giving your sweetheart a box of chocolate with pieces "mysteriously" missing.

...Ask friends for ideas. This is supposed to be a gift from the heart, so think of your gift based on what you know about the person.

...Give them a gift that you want and they don’t. For example, girls do not usually like power tools, no matter how much their boyfriends do.

...Break up during the week before or after Valentines Day.

...Exchange appliances or other boring presents. (Again, never give power tools.)

...Say, “Maybe you should keep it” when that special someone gives you your Valentine's Day gift.

Do...

...Something! Make a gift or card if you don’t have money, but always be sure to do something special for your valentine.

...Flowers and chocolate are a nice idea, but be original about it. Give your valentine their very favorite chocolate and a bouquet of their favorite flowers - not just the standard box of candy with roses.

...Make the celebration last all day. Leave sweet notes or flowers and balloons in places they will be visiting throughout the day.

...If you have the cash, take your valentine out for a ritzy dinner at the best restaurant in town. Strapped for cash? Make dinner for your sweetheart, or pack a picnic basket.

...Make time for your valentine. Get homework and other activities done early. After all, Valentine's Day only comes once a year.

...Memorize romantic quotes from their favorite movie or poem and recite them to your sweetheart.

...The main thing to do is to be original and sweet. Your valentine will appreciate a gift from the heart, and it doesn't have to take the your whole wallet.

Still at a loss for a special present? Here are some popular and easy gifting ideas for both guys and girls on Valentine's Day:

1. Make a mix CD with your valentine's favorite music, or a disc of romantic love songs.
2. Chocolate. It's cheap, it tastes good, and it's always welcome.
3. Perfume or cologne is a classy way to let your valentine know you care.
4. Time flies, so get your sweetheart a nice watch to keep track of your relationship.
5. Give the gift of flowers, whether you send a dozen long-stemmed roses or handpick your bouquet from the neighbor's garden.
6. Who doesn't like stuffed animals? These fluffy creatures are long-lasting (not to mention cuddly) symbols of your love.
7. Make your valentine feel truly special, and give them a list of the reasons why you love them.
8. Pictures of you together in an elegant frame or album are both thoughtful and economical.
9. Diamonds are a girl's best friend, but any kind of jewelry is appreciated.
10. Show your sweetheart that you've been listening. Go out and buy their favorite romantic movie or a book of poems.
