Homecoming Week 2001 Comes to a Close with an

Enchanting "Once Upon a Time" Dance

By Sara Kaplow (October 31, 2001)

Another homecoming game, dance and spirit week have come and gone. This year’s dance is sure to be remembered for its spectacular decorations, courtesy of the senior class. With a drawbridge surrounded on each side by moats with squirting fountains, the décor was one of which the seniors should be proud as they depicted the theme of "Once Upon a Time."

Nearly 400 students enjoyed the atmosphere of the dance. For some, there was an unexpected line to buy tickets, which were beautifully designed by Maggie Davis.

In addition to the wonderful décor, the music was also enjoyed more at this dance than at previous ones. "It was pretty good. There should have been more slow songs and some Disney songs," said junior Andrew Johnson.

The atmosphere of the dance was enhanced by the fact that the Mustangs won an important district game against Clarke County earlier in the day; during which the Homecoming King and Queen, Michael Burgos and Afolake Ojumu, were announced.

After a week of parading around the school dressed to fit the specified daily themes, students donned semi-formal attire for the evening and pleasantly surprised a number of their teachers. "It’s really fun to dress up all fancy," commented junior Charmaine Nerone, "I might dress like this on Monday!" The biggest costume surprise of the evening was Mr. Wilkie dressed up as a court jester, complete with matching hat.

All in all it was a successful evening at George Mason. Students and faculty alike were impressed with the thoroughly enjoyable evening. The next major dance event at Mason is the Winter Formal, co-sponsored by the sophomores and freshmen, in late December.
