CNN Visits Mason
in Search of Integrity Answers
By Juliana Pearson (March 22, 2002) A camera crew from CNN visited George Mason Tuesday to tape footage for a three-minute segment on issues of cheating, plagiarism and honor in high school. The crew, which spent nearly all day on campus, chose to feature the school after reading Lasso Online’s special edition on cheating (January 14). Since they were seeking varying perspectives on honor-related issues, the crew elected to interview senior Mike Denny, who wrote a commentary in favor of an honor code, and senior Alice Newhall, who wrote from the opposite perspective. "The story is basically about integrity, honor and what students think about it," said producer Dawn Tamir. In the interviews, Denny and Newhall’s responses reflected the viewpoints expressed in their commentaries. In addition to the interviews, the crew "shadowed" Denny and Newhall, following them from class to class. The crew even taped portions of Denny’s IB oral internal assessment for history class. The crew also visited several classes
throughout the day and taped in the halls and during lunches. It’s not
yet known when the segment will air on CNN. Check Lasso Online for further
