Fifteen George Mason French students participated in the Fairfax County Modern Foreign Language Tournament this past Saturday. Of those who competed, nine received trophies or medals for their efforts, and five received first place within their category. Award winners represented many levels of fluency within the language, receiving prizes across several categories.

In the Poetry Interpretation category, freshman Helen Rose Patterson was third place among Level One students. Rami Tahan and Elisabeth Collins, both competing in Level Two, received second and third places respectively. In the Advanced Level, senior Olivia Jung placed a flawless first with perfect scores from all judges. Juniors Charmaine Nerone and Sara Kaplow, and sophomore Michael Duarte, won first place for their Original Skit. And in the category of Dramatic Interpretation, juniors Emma Bellamy and Mercedes Bezaury-Diaz also received a first place trophy.

"I had a great time," said trophy recipient and junior Sara Kaplow. "I think it’s amazing that we won. This is my first trophy." Added teammate Charmaine Nerone, "It was fun, and I’m really glad I did it. I’m definitely going back next year."
