Mason’s Southern
Comfort Wins Battle of the Bands
By George Huff (October 23, 2001) George Mason’s Feedback and Southern Comfort competed with Mclean’s Breaking Ground in Saturday night’s high school battle of the bands. This sparsely attended event featured 40 minute sets from each band playing mostly original material but also some covers. Southern Comfort won the competition. Feedback, the third place band, coupled weak vocals with strong guitars to produce a rather unpleasureable sound. They faired rather well covering Chuck Berry’s "Johnny B Goode" but had a harder time with Metallica’s "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Keep practicing. Southern Comfort seemed to be the crowd favorite. Their great cover of Tom Petty’s "Last Dance with Mary Jane" along with good original material and harmonica playing made for a nice set. Breaking Ground, who came in a close second, sounded the most professional. Their melodic blend of hard and alternative rock had many in the crowd dancing. Event organizer Charlene
Wilson says she plans to hold more concert events at the community center
in the future though she was "disappointed" with the light turn out on
Saturday.
