Las Vegas JV Show Great Success;

Continues Tonight in Altered Format

By Tammy Ashworth (December 7, 2001)

The auditorium was packed as hundreds of students, teachers, and families turned out yesterday evening to see the opening night of GMHS’s annual JV show, which this year sports a Las Vegas theme.

As sponsor of the event, the junior class government was especially excited by the large turnout. "The money from the JV show is used to help us out with prom," said class vice-president Stephanie Melconian. "We’re hoping that the change in format will encourage people to come on both nights."

For, unlike in the past, this year’s JV show features a different set of acts on each night. Thursday’s performance consisted mainly of the traditional talent, vocal, and dance acts that have come to define the JV show, whereas tonight’s performance will feature these and several Mason bands, each playing 20 minute sets.

Among the many acts that presented on Thursday night were several vocalists, dancers, two Mason bands, and a unique skit based on the Rocky Horror Picture Show called "Time Warp." Many students performed original material, while others put their own spin on well-known songs and scenes.

But the most curiously anticipated act of the evening, and certainly the most memorable, was the surprise number put on by several members of the GM faculty, a lively rendition of "Mustang Sally." Audience members applauded wildly as these brave teachers fearlessly sang, danced, and played. "That was really fun," said Ms. Sinha, one of the performers, upon emerging breathless and laughing from back stage, and many agreed.

The talent demonstrated here last night leaves one looking forward to tonight’s conclusion. So if you’re looking to experience an evening of fun and the arts, don’t miss tonight’s performance, starting at 7:30PM in the auditorium. Admission is $3 for students and $5 for adults. Proceeds will benefit the junior class’s fundraising efforts for prom.
