Yes, Virginia, There is a Junior Class Debt;
Help Wipe It Out by Attending Tonight’s Dance (October 5, 2001)

As usual at our beloved George Mason, rumors are flying. One of the current ones – is there a Junior class debt? Some say, "If you see it in the Lasso, it’s so." Yes, Virginia, there is a Junior class debt. It was in debt the moment it signed on to have Prom at the local State Theatre, thereby binding the contract and requiring a down-payment. Technically, until the Junior class pays the State Theatre for the Prom in its entirety, it will owe the business money, and therefore be in debt.

As you may have read in a previous Lasso article, after the tragedies of September 11, the Junior class went ahead with one of its many planned car washes, but instead of putting the money towards Prom, donated all $576 to the American Red Cross.

Never fear, though, there have already been successful fundraisers and many more have been finalized. Several bake sales and car washes have taken place, with at least one more car wash for the month of October. A number of car washes are also planned for the spring, and bake sales will be held every B-day Thursday for the rest of the year.

Continuing a time-honored Mason tradition, the JV Show will also be sponsored by the Junior class, earning several thousand dollars. Yet another event – the Band Jam – will be put on by the Junior class, thus earning even more money. And let us not forget, Prom ticket sales. These will earn a large portion of the cost of Prom. Even more exciting - you, the Mason scholar, can help make money for Prom in the immediate future. How, you may ask? By coming to the first ever Mason Fall Fest tonight October 5, from 9-12 pm.

Included in this relief effort is buying raffle tickets, which can win any of a wide variety of prizes, including gift certificates from such fine local establishments as Caffeine, Papa John’s, Anthony’s, the CD Cellar, and many more.

No Junior Class debt? Thank goodness it lives on as a rumor. Yes, Virginia, there is a Junior class debt, but do not fear all you upperclassmen – your Prom is in good hands.
