On Hoover

I loved journalism in high school but if I’d been a student at GMHS, I would have REALLY LOVED journalism in high school!  As a faithful reader of Lasso (20 years in print form, 7 years on-line) I have long been impressed by the amazingly high quality of this student newspaper.

For nearly all of the time that I’ve been a reader of Lasso, Michael Hoover has been the teacher of journalism and the advisor to the newspaper staff.   Throughout that period his students’ work has been consistently courageous, thorough and always responsible journalism.   The Lasso product has been excellent because the teaching has been superb and the expectations of high school journalists have been nothing short of professional.

We will miss Michael Hoover’s expert guidance to our young journalists and we will miss his knack for getting them always to find ways to do better, to go farther and to demand more of themselves.   As he and I part daily company after 27 years together, I wish him countless hours of absorbing reading and I beg him to get started on that book he’s been planning to write, many chapters of which he’s outlined for me already!
