The Philadelphia provided support
to General Patton and the 7th Army both in North Africa and
in the battle
for Sicily. Their antitank gunfire was vital to the success
of the “leap frog” landings behind enemy lines on
the road to Messina. The History Channel documentary “Patton,” includes
original footage of the Philadelphia in this action. |

As the communique below states,
General Patton was
scheduled to return to the USA
on the Philadelphia in December 1945.
These plans changed when Patton died suddenly in Europe.
