USS Philadelphia - On Deck

I remember Dad telling me
that he used to accompany Captain Ansel
on these inspections to take notes
and later type up the report.

Dad was a welder by trade and applied for that duty
but he could also type 60 words per minute.

He told me that he didn't see the battles. He heard them and
could tell which guns were firing by the amount of vibration.
He sat deep down in the ship with headphones (damage control)
and typed up the battle reports once combat was over.
